This was the first act by Maori in claiming a collective nationhood\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: medium;\"\u003eTo Northern Maori, the United Tribes Flag meant that the British recognised Aotearoa as an Independent nation, and hence acknowledging the Mana of the chiefs at that time. The flag was flown around the Bay of Islands and on trading ships to Sydney.
