The Korowai is held in highest regard, a symbol of prestige and honour, and worn with respect, mana(prestige) and honour. The Korowai is the perfect Taonga(treasured gift) to commemorate the occasion.Traditionally, the Korowai was a cloak made from Muka(flax) and had tassels on it.

It takes months to prepare the flax, traditionally dye it, and to weave it.These traditional korowai are stunning and without doubt exceptionally beautiful. We can appreciate all the hard work in creating one. This is why the costs can be very expensive to purchase one.

A modern contemporary Korowai can be made within a week with a sewing machine. Modern dyes account for a greater colour range and diversity of design and creativity. As we are not allowed to use native bird feathers, most of the modern Korowai today are made from Hen and Coque feathers that have been steam dyed to create the amazing colour range available in our Korowai collections.
