The United Tribes 1834 Flag He Whakaputanga

This flag was the National Flag used at the time by Northern Rangatira(Maori Chieftains )in 1834. The Confederation was convened in 1834 by James Busby, British resident sent by the Colonial Office to serve as British resident to set up trade between Maori and Europeans.

Busby hoped the flag would encourage the Maori chiefs to act collectively. The following year 34 Northern chiefs signed the Declaration of Independence, where they declared the Chieftains as Sovereign Rulers of NZ. This was the first act by Maori in claiming a collective nationhood

To Northern Maori, the United Tribes Flag meant that the British recognised Aotearoa as an Independent nation, and hence acknowledging the Mana of the chiefs at that time. The flag was flown around the Bay of Islands and on trading ships to Sydney. At that time, ships from NZ, were seized if they did not have a flag from the country of origin.

It has a St Georges Cross, with a smaller St Georges cross in the top left quadrant. In each of the blue blocks is an eight pointed star.
